There is much to consider as you are approaching retirement. We encourage you to learn about the eligibility criteria, available benefits, and additional resources as a retiree of the University of Pittsburgh.
The good news is that the administrative process is not that difficult and the best news is that the University of Pittsburgh provides a very substantial retiree benefits package to its eligible retirees and their eligible spouse or domestic partner. Surveys indicate that the University’s retirement benefits are amongst the best in the country compared to similar institutions.
Information for Potential Retirees
Please review the information and various links we've provided to assist you if you are planning on retiring from the University at this time:
- It is recommended that you begin the retirement process at a minimum of three (3) months prior to your retirement date. The Steps Toward Retirement Checklist (PDF) will assist you in your planning.
- Review the on-demand recorded retiree information session (SharePoint) for basic information about retiring from the University and related benefits. (The session slide deck is also available.)
Medicare
You should apply for Medicare Part A online once you reach age 65 while you are working, as it is at no-cost to you. Medicare Part B is not required while you are actively working and have health coverage. You can delay Medicare Part B if you're already enrolled in health coverage through an employer health plan.
As part of the retirement process, one to two months prior to your retirement date, the Benefits Department will provide you with an Employer Verification Form that should be mailed in with your Medicare Part B application to your local Social Security office. For more information, visit the Social Security or Medicare websites. Helpful information is also available via the Medicare Counseling PA MEDI Program.
