Organization Development

Organization Development (OD) is a department within the Office of Human Resources that serves as a strategic partner with University community clients to help them create and realize their strategic plans, and achieve greater levels of effectiveness and productivity in their organization.  The OD consulting team provides comprehensive consultation along with customized products, services, and results-based solutions to assist University colleges, schools and departments to achieve success.  Products and services include strategic planning, organization assessment and analysis, process improvement, performance management, and leadership and workforce development, all described below.

Products and Services

  • Organization Analysis:  Projects include analysis of organization structure, work distribution, work processes and work relationships with recommendations that may include organizational restructure, job/work redesign and/or streamlined job responsibilities and function.

  • Process Mapping:  All organizations have work processes. Mapping work processes provides a common framework for those involved to enhance communication and understanding of work responsibilities.  Process Mapping projects focus on the identification, planning, and implementation of process and efficiency improvements for the organization.

  • Performance Management:  The Organization Development group provides performance management consulting to a number of colleges, schools, and departments to ensure their performance appraisal system is supporting the ever-increasing need to achieve higher levels of performance and productivity. Services include competency identification, leadership coaching and instruction, goal setting and performance management learning.

  • Strategic Planning:  The Organization Development group consults with schools and departments to help them identify and effectively communicate their strategic plan.

  • Learning and Development Programs:  Organization Development works with the senior leader/leadership team of schools and departments to identify and address the learning needs of their workforce and design a solution to meet their unique needs. 

  • Faculty and Staff Development Program:  The Office of Human Resources offers a variety of workshops to enhance the professional development of University of Pittsburgh faculty and staff.  Organization Development oversees and administers the Faculty and Staff Development Program (FSDP).  FSDP brochures announcing workshops are available online during the Fall Session (September - December) and Spring Session (March - June).
