PittPerks now offers supplemental medical coverage, with accident, critical illness, and hospital indemnity insurance, through MetLife as a voluntary benefit. This employee-paid coverage would serve as a supplemental policy to complement your UPMC insurance provided by the University.

Accident, critical illness and hospital indemnity insurance may help you pay for unexpected costs resulting from an accident or serious illness.1 These plans are designed to supplement your medical insurance with lump-sum payments made directly to you for qualifying events. For a monthly premium, you gain:

  • The ability to spend the benefit as you wish — for co-pays, deductibles, transportation expenses, or childcare expenses
  • Coverage available for you and your family2
  • No medical questions asked3

Additional Health Screening Benefit Option

As part of the supplemental medical coverage for eligible employees, the critical illness plan offers an additional Health Screening Benefit (HSB) for covered screenings and tests. Enrolled participants and their covered dependents can earn an extra benefit just for taking care of their health.

This unique benefit pays the employee and each of their covered dependents for taking one or more of the covered screenings or tests through the calendar year of January 1 - December 31 (this is separate from the plan year of July 1 - June 30). The HSB option includes more than 50 qualifying health screenings or tests, including, but not limited to, routine health check-ups, immunizations, hearing tests, and mammograms. The HSB is separate from any other benefit an employee may be eligible to receive under the MetLife insurance plan.

To file a HSB claim:

  1. Call 1-888-777-7418 (prompt #2) or our general line 1-800-GET-MET8 (1-800-438-6388)
  2. Provide a few details, including:
    • The healthcare professional’s name, address, and phone number
    • The health screening or test taken and the date it was completed
    • Address where the health screening or test was performed
  3. Receive HSB payment; checks are typically issued within a few business days once the claim is processed

Employees can also file a HSB claim online through the MetLife MyBenefits portal or by mail with a paper claim form. You must submit you HSB claim within 1 year from the health screening or test date in order to receive the benefit.
