Dear Families,
Welcome to the University of Pittsburgh's Child Development Center Kindergarten
Class Web Site. Let us tell you a bit about ourselves and our program.
The Kindergarten Program at the University Child Development Center, a
laboratory early childhood school, is sponsored by the University of
Pittsburgh. Given its location as a part of the University community, the
program is afforded the opportunity to provide kindergarten children with a
wide variety of rich experiences. Small class size, a gifted staff, our
University affiliation, and the Child Development Center philosophy, in a
multi-cultural city creates a stimulating climate where excellence and
diversity are celebrated. Each child is guided in the perpetual development of
his/her strengths, encouraging independence and the development of self-esteem.
The curriculum is described briefly here in the web site.
In a class of twenty children, we provide a staff of one Head Teacher, one
Associate, and one part-time Assistant, all of whom are involved with the class
on a daily basis. Additionally, in the classroom are undergraduate students who
are hired to assist and practicum students who are fulfilling their college
requirements. The limited class size and ratio of teachers enables us to uphold
our commitment to quality programming that is characterized by individually
appropriate curriculum and frequent, responsive interactions between children
and teachers.
There are two Parent-Teacher conferences scheduled each year, one in the fall
and one in the spring. These provide written evaluation and the opportunity to
discuss progress, show examples of the child's work and/or address future plans
and developmental issues. Daily written and verbal communication between
teachers and parents is a hallmark of our program which allows us to develop
collaborative partnerships to ensure your child receives the richest
Kindergarten experience possible. Upon completion of the Kindergarten program
each child receives a written transcript. Our past experience indicates that
children make a smooth transition to first grade in a variety of neighborhood,
magnet, charter, and private schools.
We are excited you are visiting us! If you have additional questions after
reading the following material, please feel free to contact the Child
Development Center at 412-383-2100 or by electronic mail.
Sincerely,
Jamie Wincovitch
Kindergarten Teacher
