GENERAL QUESTIONS

What does the Organization Development (OD) Department at the University of Pittsburgh do?
The OD consulting team provides comprehensive consultation along with customized products, services, and results-based solutions to assist University colleges, schools and departments achieve success. OD also administers the Faculty & Staff Development Program (FSDP) which offers a variety of workshops to University faculty and staff.

Do you charge for your consulting services?
OD consulting services are provided free of charge to the University colleges, schools and departments. When meetings, training or retreats require travel outside of the Pittsburgh campus, departments will be asked to pay the travel expenses of the OD staff involved. If OD interventions involve training, there may be a charge for proprietary training materials.

Do you offer training?
When there is a training need, OD will meet with a client to discuss the needs and possible solutions to address those needs. If training is the best solution, OD will discuss various options. OD often uses vendors for training materials, therefore, you can expect to pay a fee for training material.

I would like to find a more effective way to evaluate my employees’ performance.
OD provides consultation, products, and services on performance management/performance appraisal and has worked with a number of colleges, schools and departments across the University to improve their performance management process. Contact OD at 412.624.8044 to schedule a consultation.

Where can I find information on professional development?
In addition to the workshops offered through the Faculty & Staff Development Program, Pitt offers a wide array of computer technology courses through Learning Solutions at the College of General Studies. The College of General Studies also provides non-credit professional programs in a variety of fields. The Writing Center is a good resource for improving your writing skills.

What is the general process and timeline for utilizing OD’s services?
Once a department requests assistance from OD, a consultation meeting will be scheduled to gather information and assess the needs of the department. Depending on the services required, OD will then work with the department to construct a project plan. The input of the department requesting assistance is vital to the planning process and a successful outcome. Department representatives will be consulted throughout the process. The scope of a project will dictate the time involved.

Who can request OD services?
Any University employee can inquire about OD services, however, the initial meeting and subsequent project work will need to include the college, school or department leadership. Depending upon the inquiry, the person or department requesting assistance will be referred to another department within HR that can more appropriately address their needs.

FSDP QUESTIONS

When are Faculty & Staff Development workshops offered?
Workshops are offered in the fall (September thru December) and in the spring (March thru June). Workshops usually take place on weekday mornings for 2-3 hours. Workshop schedules and registration are available at http://www.hr.pitt.edu/orgdev/FSDP.htm. All University faculty and staff are invited to participate. For staff, FSDP workshops require supervisor approval.

What workshops are offered through the Faculty & Staff Development Program?
Workshops are offered on a variety of topics including professional writing, human resources development, University accounting & business procedures, personal development, career planning, international services and more. When will I receive the schedule of FSDP workshops?
The FSDP workshops take place in the spring (March thru June) and in the fall (September thru December). Brochures are mailed, as well as being available on-line, approximately two weeks before the 1st workshop in the spring and again in the fall.

How do I register for a FSDP workshop?

How do I cancel my registration for a workshop?
Simply click on the Course Registration link found on the FSDP web page: http://www.hr.pitt.edu/orgdev/FSDP.htm and follow the instructions to cancel a registration. You can also call OD at 412.624.8046 to cancel a registration. It is important to cancel your registration as soon as you know that you will not be able to attend a workshop. This allows other interested staff and faculty the opportunity to register.

How do I know if a class is appropriate for me?
Please click on the following link http://www.hr.pitt.edu/orgdev/FSDP.htm to see a detailed description of each workshop. Each description will include an answer to “Who should attend?”. Some workshop tracks (HRDT and OIS for example) require prior participation in introductory level workshops and/or a supervisory level position.

Can I take a class during my regular work hours?
Workshops are scheduled during work hours because they are designed to provide faculty and staff with professional and personal skills to help them be more effective on the job. As with any absence from regular work hours, staff are required to have their supervisor’s approval to attend workshops.

Is there a fee for the FSDP workshops?
Workshops are free for faculty and staff unless otherwise indicated in the workshop description.

Who can take HRDT programs?
To register for an HRDT workshop, you must supervise staff and/or be an administrator with responsibilities for a functional area.

Is there a record of the FSDP workshops that I have attended?
Upon request, OD will send a list of workshops that you have attended by email or fax. Please contact us by phone at 412.624.8044 or submit a request by using this feedback form.

What happens if an FSDP workshop is cancelled?
In the unlikely event that a workshop is cancelled, those who are registered will receive an email indicating so.

Can you provide me with written confirmation of my attendance at a FSDP workshop?
Upon request, OD will send an email confirming attendance at a specific workshop. Simply call 412.624.8044 or submit a request via email by using this this feedback form.

Can my entire department go through a FSDP workshop?
Please contact OD at 412.624.8044 to inquire about when FSDP workshops are appropriate for individual departments.
