What does your Body Mass Index Mean?

Body Mass Index (BMI) is generally used by doctors and health professional to help determine if a person is in a healthy weight range. BMI is one of the multiple factors related to developing a chronic disease. Refer to the chart below to asses your BMI status.

BMI Weight Status
Below 18.5 Underweight
18.5 - 24.9 Normal
25.0 - 29.9 Overweight
30.0 and Above Obese

BMI is an indicator of total body fat, and the same table is used for both men and women. BMI has the following limitations:

  • It can overstate weight status in persons who are athletic, or have muscular builds.

  • It can understate weight status in persons who have lost muscle mass.

It is important to talk with your doctor if you have concerns about your BMI, losing weight, or starting an exercise program.
