Office of Affirmative Action
The University of Pittsburgh Office of Affirmative Action
A Service Center for the University Community

How does the Office Function, And Whom Does It Serve?

The Office of Affirmative Action is part of the Office of the Chancellor, and the director of affirmative action also serves as an assistant to the chancellor. The office is both an administrative and a service center for the University community.

The Office of Affirmative Action has overall responsibility for providing leadership, coordination, and oversight for the University's affirmative action program. Given the size, complexity, and collegial nature of the University, the Office of Affirmative Action cannot do this alone. The campus community contributes to the University's commitment to affirmative action through the work of senior administrative officers, deans, directors, department heads, managers, supervisors, and various campus-wide, school, departmental, and student committees and groups as well as individual faculty, staff, and students.

While faculty, staff, and students are the principal constituencies served, the affirmative action staff also cooperate closely with members of the local and regional community, government agencies, and departments at the local, state, and federal levels, and other institutions of higher education throughout the nation.

What Services are Available?

The Office of Affirmative Action:
  • Coordinates and facilitates the development and implementation of equal opportunity and affirmative action policies and procedures for the University.
  • Monitors progress in implementing affirmative action programs and realizing affirmative action goals.
  • Prepares institutional and governmental reports.
  • Conducts studies and undertakes research projects.
  • Participates in a variety of training events.
  • Handles internal complaints of discrimination or discriminatory harassment.
  • Serves as a resource center and library on affirmative action and related topics.
  • Serves as a link between the University and other institutions, governmental agencies, or community groups with related concerns.

University Commitment to Affirmative Action

"We want to make certain that the opportunities we provide are equally available to all. That requires more than a few determined leaders. It requires a campus-wide effort."
-Mark A. Nordenberg, Chancellor

The goals of the University of Pittsburgh affirmative action commitment are to:
  • achieve diversity in the racial/ethnic and sex composition of its workforce at all levels;
  • enhance opportunities for enrolling, retaining, and graduating students from under represented groups;
  • provide accessibility and accommodation to individuals with disabilities.
  • create a campus environment free of bigotry and harassment; and
  • engage minority and women-owned businesses as vendors or suppliers.
